Domenico Montagnana
Montagnana 1740
A warm, velvety Venetian from Montagnana's bench.
A 1740 cello straight out of Domenico Montagnana's Venetian workshop. It has the broad waist and the dark, velvety voice the man was famous for, and a stage presence to match.
Sound
The low strings open up wide and willing. The high strings stay silvery, even when you climb into the attic. Equally happy in a string quartet or front and centre with an orchestra behind it.
History
Wynand has been playing this cello since 2008. Before that, it lived quietly in a private Viennese collection.
